BOROUGHMUIR OPENING – SCOTTISH MINISTER PRAISES OHMG BUILT SCHOOL IN EDINBUGH
The workmanship of O’Hare & McGovern was praised when the new £28m. Boroughmuir High School, Edinburgh was officially opened by the Scotland Minister for Higher and Further Education and Science, Shirley-Anne Somerville.
The school has already won the Building of the Year in the Edinburgh Architectural Association Awards for 2018.
OHMG Managing Director Martin Lennon and two of the company’s senior management, Geoffrey Archer, Commercial Director, and Seanie O’Hare, Construction Director, were among the guests at the special ceremony.
Council leader Adam McVey said: “There have been challenges along the way and I would like to thank the school staff, pupils and parents for their patience. I am sure everyone will agree, the school has been well worth the wait.”
The school which opened to the pupils earlier this year, was built 500 metres from the existing site of an old Victorian building – the school was founded just over 100 years ago – and close to a canal. Facilities include a multi use game area area on the roof of the building, one of the first of its type in Scotland.
Extra classrooms, science laboratories, catering facilities, a fitness suite and dance studio have also been provided.
Councillor Cammy Day, deputy leader on Edinburgh Council said he was proud of the innovative design strategy which helped create an educational brief and vision for the school that truly delivered a unique building which met the needs of all its pupils.
He added: “It is clear the building is having a positive impact on teaching and learning and allows the school to make the best use of new technology to equip them for their future careers.”
Ms Somerville said the government’s infrastructure investment had ensured that teachers were able to teach pupils in dynamic, high tech facilities which were vital if they were to meet the future learning needs of young people.
The pupils had now transferred into state of the art accommodation. She added: “This is a fantastic new development.”
