Finalists Announced For CIOB’s Construction Manager Of The Year

O’Hare & McGovern are delighted to reveal that our Contracts Director, Seanie O’Hare MCIOB has been announced a finalist for the UK’s top Construction Manager Award 2016.

For over 40 years, the Chartered Institute of Building has pursued the most talented construction managers.

Seanie was named finalist in the 2016 New Build & Refurbishment category between £14 – £20 Million for the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine project. He was also winner of the Construction Excellence Award in Northern Ireland.

The new build project involved the construction of a five storey research facility with a double-skin façade housing all M&E plant, a 16m high section of frameless glass with no visible connections, Gustafs panelling and cantilevered hanging pods, which were just some of the challenges.

Seanie exhibited indisputable management skills when it came to constructing one of the largest Health & Education infrastructure schemes ever delivered for Queen’s University Belfast. The building which was a first of its kind in the UK, was delivered on time, within budget and with zero defects. Seanie’s programming, sequencing, use of BIM Level 2 technologies and methodical insights were outstanding; saving 20 weeks on the programme.

Each year thirty top industry judges drawn from Fellows and Members of the CIOB spend six months, clocking up a total of 15,000 miles, interviewing candidates (including the nominee, client and contractors) and visiting every shortlisted site before the overall winner can be decided upon.

Finalists are chosen from a diverse mixture of projects ranging below £2 million to large scale projects over £80 million. Gold and silver medals are awarded across 11 categories. An overall winner is announced from the 11 gold medallists.

Saleem Akram, Director at the CIOB said:

“The value of professional construction managers is felt well beyond the construction site. They not only produce outstanding buildings but their work influences the way we live our lives and how we interact with the environment around us. Our congratulations go to the finalists who in reaching the final have achieved something very special that will enhance their careers. They have all proven themselves more than equal to a wide range of challenges, combining resourceful and creative application of building technology with inspiring project and team management and top communication skills. It is very pleasing to see the less well-known companies in construction putting their best people forward and challenging some of the UK’s biggest brands. Talent exists throughout the industry and CMYA recognises those who are achieving exceptional work no matter where they operate.”

The award has seen some significant changes in the years that the CIOB has been recognising and celebrating management excellence across the construction industry. Effective public private partnerships, the use of digital technologies and successful solutions to environmental challenges are just a few of them.

Winners will be announced on 15th September 2016 at a prestigious awards dinner in London.

O’Hare & McGovern wish Seanie the best of luck!
