“Girdwood Community Hub Makes Positive Impact” – RICS Judges

OHMG has won a major new award for developing a former military base in North Belfast into a showpiece local amenity.

Girdwood Army barracks, in the city’s Crumlin Road, area was lying derelict before one of the company’s construction teams moved in and transform the site into the £20m Girdwood Community Hub.

The state of the art shared space venue, one of the finest of its type in Northern Ireland, offers first class leisure, community and education facilities.

OHMG pre-Construction manager Noel McKee and contracts manager Nick Oldfield attended an awards night organised by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors to pick up the accolade.

There were two others as well which acknowledged the work on the redeveloped National Stadium at Windsor Park, as well as the high end student accommodation scheme at the landmark John Bell House, also in Belfast.

The Girdwood development was acclaimed by the judges as Project of the Year. The judges said it demonstrated overall outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment which added value to the local area.

They also praised it for creating “a positive ripple effect impacting the built environment dramatically and positively.”

The John Bell House scheme won the Building Conservation award. This was a particularly challenging project for the design team who managed to turn one of Belfast’s oldest buildings into a stunning 21st century property at College Square East, providing five star accommodation for more than 400 students. It includes shared apartments and en-suite studios.

The £35m redevelopment at Windsor Park has already won several construction industry awards.
