Project Overview

Mossley Primary School is a 630 pupil primary school on the northern outskirts of Belfast.

The project involved the procurement under a novated Design and Build contract of a new two storey Primary school to replace the existing buildings at Mossley, Newtownabbey. The new buildings consist of a 21 classroom Primary School of 5000m², complete with state of the art kitchen facilities to provide up to 300 school meals per day.

The existing complex was demolished upon completion of the new primary school which had to remain fully operational until the new school was constructed. The design of the school combined the benefits of a linear and courtyard arrangement, with four education wings containing classroom clusters set perpendicular to a main accommodation spine containing the various special need support units / ancillary spaces. The new school contained a modern air-conditioned computer suite, entrance with reception, administration offices, Principal’s office and staff room, and associated work. Outdoor facilities include two soft tarmac playgrounds, an all-weather football pitch and a grass football pitch.

The Primary school’s special needs unit building was designed to meet DDA requirements including installation of ramps, handrails, audio/ visual facilities, (LRI) Light Reflective Index etc able to cater for the needs of Autistic children. Also constructed in the schools final phases were the new car parks for both staff and parents, bus set down & pick up areas and new site access routes to and from the new school off the main road (Hazelburn Road).

The school received a BREEAM rating of Very Good according to client specification. O’Hare & McGovern registered the scheme with the Considerate Constructors and maintained regular communication with the local community. We implemented restricted working in areas at set times so as not to disturb the residents at early mornings at their request.

A separate service access was provided away from the main entrance. Limited car parking was been provided in close proximity to the School and Nursery to prevent the site being overwhelmed. The main car park was located discreetly at the bottom of the site, but still easily accessible to both buildings.

The new school was completed early and this enabled the school to commence their decant two weeks early. As all fixtures and fittings were new and supplied through the contract the only materials that had to be transferred to the new school were books. OHMG assisted the school authorities in this task.
