New OHMG Built Computer Science Hub Opens At Queen’s University Belfast

Queen’s University’s spectacular new computer science hub – redeveloped by O’Hare & McGovern – has been officially opened by a former graduate who heads up Google’s sales operations in the United States

Geoffrey Archer, OHMG’s commercial director, was among the VIPs who met with Ian Loughran from Armagh, during the impressive opening ceremony at the £14m building with its ultra-modern exterior of coloured glass fins.

They represent digital code, a main mathematical aspect of computer science.

The centre on Belfast’s Malone Road is regarded as one of the most iconic education sites in Northern Ireland, and allows up to 1,000 students reading computer-related subjects have access to state of the art facilities.

OHMG’s redevelopment programme was completed in nine months. The hub spans four floors and includes laboratories and break-out spaces as well as providing a meeting place for creative learning, and a new mode of teaching.

Queen’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Johnson said:

“The impressive design fits the requirements of our world class University, and supports our outstanding students and staff on conducting leading-edge education and research, focused on the needs of global society.”

Mr Loughran, who studied accountancy at Queen’s during the mid-1990’s before taking on a career path which brought him to his senior position with Google in California said:

“Computer science education is critical, not only because of the growing number of computer related jobs, but also because it develops key skills which foster new ideas and drive innovation in tech and other fields.”
