O’Hare & McGovern Ltd Wins Construction Excellence Award 2015

O’Hare & McGovern are pleased to announce that we have been awarded as the ‘Overall Winner’ of the Construction Excellence Awards 2015 in recognition of our work on The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast.

Managing Director Eamon O’Hare and senior members of our management team received the top accolade in recognition of the firm’s work on the showpiece, at the gala awards hosted in Culloden Hotel in Holywood on October 8th 2015.

The interdisciplinary research Centre is part of a £350m investment to support the University’s Vision in buildings and facilities over the next ten years.

Identified as the world-leading Centre for Experimental Medicine in Northern Ireland, The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine is committed to the highest quality scientific endeavour provides accommodation for 330 staff, specialising in researching cures for eye disease, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and the development of a global programme to aid understanding of the genetics of complex chronic diseases.

The Construction Employers Federation, in partnership with Specify magazine and in association with Ulster Business recognise excellence from the Northern Ireland Construction Industry.

CEF Managing Director, John Armstrong said:

“It is an excellent example of how our local construction industry is pivotal to the development of so many important projects across a wide range of sectors in Northern Ireland each year. This particular project will benefit thousands of patients in the years to come, supporting the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine in its mission to develop new avenues for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of important ophthalmic and vascular diseases to relieve human suffering.”

The £32m project, which involved the development of a major energy saving scheme, took two years to complete and adjoins the neighbouring Cancer Research building at Jubilee Road.

As long-term partners of Queen’s, OHMG has accomplished quality and partnership awards over the last 25 years, but this latest accolade, overall winner of the Construction Excellence Awards 2015, is probably the most special of them all, according to Managing Director, Eamon O’Hare as he said:

“This was an outstanding achievement by a special team involved in a very unique project. It required massive effort and total commitment. We are immensely proud of the building and it strengthens our long partnership with Queen’s University Belfast.”

Damien Toner, Director of Estates at Queen’s, said:

“The building will achieve an environmental BREEAM rating of Excellent, as it incorporates a range of measures to deliver a more sustainable building. Environmental sustainability is integral to the University’s objective of reducing carbon emissions by 2020.”

Guest of Honour, the former Olympic Champion, Dame Mary Peters presented the OHMG team with the award, congratulating all involved.
